The Bispectral Index of Anesthesia or BIS sensors is used most commonly for the purpose of anesthesia management. Such sensors are responsive to brain activity by doing an EEG measurement of the patient and subsequently providing measurement of the level of anesthesia. This technology gives anesthesiologists the ability to use their expertise in a non-invasive way while assuring the ability of the patient to be in a safe and effective state of sedation. Aside from the advantage of increased patient safety, the use of such sensors makes it possible to get more efficient patient outcomes during surgical procedures, which render them invaluable in medical monitoring.
